Is your dog ready to hike?

Readiness depends on the individual dog, route and weather. Ask your vet about activity limits, health needs and parasite prevention. Check the land manager’s current dog rules before leaving. A checklist cannot establish that a dog is fit for a hike.

Fitness before distance

Readiness depends on the individual dog, route and weather. Ask your vet about activity limits, health needs and parasite prevention. Check the land manager’s current dog rules before leaving. A checklist cannot establish that a dog is fit for a hike.

Age and body type matter

PuppiesGrowth plates are still closing. Skip long climbs and forced mileage; short, fun outings on soft ground are plenty until your vet says otherwise.
SeniorsOlder dogs often still love the trail - choose shorter, flatter routes, take more breaks, and watch for next-day soreness.
Flat-faced breedsPugs, bulldogs and similar breeds overheat fast and struggle on climbs. Keep hikes short, cool and shady, or skip hot days entirely.
Health conditionsHeart, joint, breathing or weight issues change the plan. A quick vet check before the season starts is time well spent.

Trail skills to practice at home first

You don't need perfect obedience, but three things make trails safer: a recall that works around mild distractions (or a commitment to keeping the leash on), calm behavior when strangers and dogs pass, and a "leave it" for discarded food, animal droppings and interesting smells. Practice on quiet local paths before busy trailheads.

Paperwork and ID

Before the season: current rabies vaccination (many parks require it), a collar tag with your phone number, and a microchip with up-to-date contact details. Some trails cross areas where tick prevention matters - ask your vet what's right for your region. Then start small: an hour on an easy loop beats an epic that ends with a carried dog.
